1st XV tour of the North Island

The 2012 1st XV has just completed a successful pre-season tour of the North Island, the team were away for 10 days, starting in Auckland and finishing in Palmerston North. The team played 3 games against very established opposition. Game 1 was against St Kentigern College from Auckland, this team won the Auckland competition last year, our boys had a narrow loss 27 to 20, there were a few first game nerves but still plenty of positives to come out of the game. Game 2 was against Hamilton Boys’ High School, this team went to the national top 4 last year, our team had a great win 27 to 7, the first time Hamilton Boys’ have lost at home in 7 years. Game 3 was against Palmerston North Boys’ High School, coach Rhys Archibald’s old stomping ground, the boys finished a fine tour with a 27 to 10 win. Coaches Mike Drury and Rhys Archibald are very pleased with the tour and are excited about the upcoming press cup season.

CBHS Latest Rugby Star

Congratulations to CBHS’s latest rugby star Mark Jackman, Mark has been selected in the New Zealand 7’s team. Mark played his first tournament in Wellington over the weekend, and played a crucial role in the team as the New Zealander’s won the home tournament. Jackman was thrusted into to mix early as an injury to Tony Arnold in the opening game saw Jackman take the field and become the starting five eight for the remaining matches. Jackman now makes his way to Los Vegas for the USA leg of the 7’s circuit, where they hope to continue their winning ways.

Jackman was born in Ashburton but made the move to Christchurch Boys’ High School at age 13. He boarded at Adams House Hostel for 5 years, and was the head boy of Adams House in 2006. He played for the CBHS 1st XV in 2005 and 2006, these were some very good times for both CBHS and Jackman. 2005 and 2006 saw the 1st XV win the Press Cup, the Moascar Cup, NZ secondary School Champions and World Sanix Champions. Also in the CBHS 1st XV at this time were players such as Owen Franks, Colin Slade, Rob Smith, Nasi Manu and Andrew Horrell. CBHS 1st XV coach Richard Taylor said “No one deserves success on the big stage more than Mark Jackman. His focus, commitment and training ethic is second to none. Add impressive physical attributes and quality communication skills and you have the whole package”. Following secondary School Jackman went to Napier and Played for the Hawkes Bay Magpies ITM cup team from 2007 to 2011. He was playing for the Canterbury 7’s team when NZ 7’s coach Gordan Tietjens spotted him and selected him for the national team.

Jackman now hopes to continue to play for the national 7’s team and play ITM cup for Canterbury. All the best Mark, the whole of CBHS is behind you.

A mixed bag of results as we approach the business end of the season. The 1st XV went down narrowly to Nelson College 18-20 to miss out on the finals for the Press Cup, whilst the 2nd XV lost to University A 15-25 in the Under 20 grade. Two outstanding performances see the ‘Might’ 3rd XV contest the Under 18 Final v St Bede’s 2nd XV, whilst the Under 16A beat the Under 15A 45-5 to set up a final showdown v St Bede’s.
